I went back to Kalinga to accompany Sofia (our Vogue intern, turned contributor, who quickly became one of my good friends) who pitched to do an in-depth story on how the youth and the women of Kalinga are taking on the batok traditional tattoo. I had a travel story to finish anyway (about Kalinga) so I figured it would be helpful to come back and do some interviews, more relaxed (because I wasn't assisting production this time). My favorite part was seeing how the designs evolved. Kalinga youths taking the batok technique and using that for designs of their own: a press, pause and play button of an iPod on her wrist, a rose on the calf, etc. We talked about weed and Filipino hip-hop. For the rest of the night, we retired to our cots. Baked and laughing, but careful not to touch each other's fresh tattoos. Just kids being kids with other kids.
